Case Study:
Global Internet Engineering Conferences
Conferences are repeating and ongoing events where consistency and understanding of the themes and people pays in long term relationships and trust.
The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) brings together experts from around the world to develop the technical standards that keep the internet secure, reliable and interoperable. With three international conferences each year, these events are fast-paced, highly collaborative and filled with simultaneous meetings, workshops, hackathons and presentations. Having worked with the IETF over many years, I've become a trusted member of the conference team, working alongside the marketing and communications staff to create a comprehensive visual record that supports the organisation throughout the event and long after it has finished.
Careful planning is essential for an event of this scale. Before each conference, I work closely with the marketing team to map out schedules, locations and priorities, ensuring key speakers, awards, working group chairs, networking sessions, hackathons, special guests and the overall atmosphere are all covered. Large international conferences have countless moving parts, often spread across multiple venues, so understanding the logistics is just as important as understanding the photography. By anticipating where important conversations and moments will happen, I can work efficiently and unobtrusively, delivering high-quality imagery that is available throughout the conference for news, social media, press releases and future marketing.
Long-term relationships are built on trust, and that's particularly important when working within an organisation where privacy, security and professionalism matter. Returning to the IETF year after year has allowed me to build genuine relationships with participants from across the global internet community, giving me a deeper understanding of the people behind the technology and the work they do. That familiarity helps me capture authentic interactions, recognise key contributors and produce photography that tells the story of the conference rather than simply documenting it. Whether covering an intimate working dinner or a major international conference, my role is to provide dependable, thoughtful photography that helps communicate the importance of the IETF's work to audiences around the world.
